Egypt in 5 Days: What’s Realistic

Egypt Wanderer Editors

Five days is tight for Egypt — workable, but it means picking one region properly rather than sampling everything. Here’s the version that actually works, built around depth in Cairo and Luxor rather than a rushed multi-region attempt.

Days 1–2: Cairo & Giza

The Grand Egyptian Museum and pyramids on day one; Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili on day two. This alone justifies a short trip if Cairo is genuinely your priority, and gives real time at both the modern museum and the older, atmospheric Islamic quarter.

Day 3: Fly to Luxor

A morning flight gets you to Luxor with the afternoon free for Karnak Temple — give it real time rather than rushing, since it easily absorbs two to three hours on its own.

Day 4: Luxor West Bank

Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon, ideally starting at opening to beat both heat and crowds. An optional hot air balloon flight at dawn is the single most-requested add-on if your morning schedule allows it.

Five days means choosing depth in one region over breadth across three.

Day 5: Fly Home from Luxor or Back via Cairo

Luxor has limited direct international connections, so most travelers fly back through Cairo — build in enough buffer for the connection rather than cutting it close, particularly given Cairo’s airport can have unpredictable security line lengths.

What to Skip

Aswan, Abu Simbel, the Red Sea, and Alexandria all fall outside a realistic 5-day window. Adding any of them means cutting real time from Cairo or Luxor — better to save them for a return trip than rush through both.

Pick One Region, Properly

Five days in Egypt is a choice between Cairo and the Nile, not a tour of both. The itinerary that disappoints people is the one that tries to include a cruise, Giza and a beach; the one that works picks a lane.

Option One: Cairo And Giza

Three full days covers the pyramids, Saqqara, the Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum, and Islamic Cairo without rushing. Stay at Mena House for the plateau or the Nile Ritz-Carlton for the collections.

Option Two: Luxor And Aswan

Fly straight to Luxor and skip Cairo entirely. A three-night cruise such as Royal Lotus or Steigenberger Minerva covers Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan, and you will have seen more of ancient Egypt than most two-week visitors manage.

What To Leave Out

Abu Simbel, on five days, unless it is the reason you came. And the Red Sea, entirely — a beach day costs a temple day at this length.

The Honest Advice

If five days is all you have, go anyway. Egypt is worth a short trip, and the people who regret it are the ones who tried to see everything rather than the ones who saw less.
