Uniworld calls its S.S. Sphinx a “Super Ship,” and the name fits — launched in 2021 with the same lavish, destination-specific design language behind Uniworld’s celebrated European vessels, applied to the Nile for the first time by a major international operator.

What Makes It Notable

Every one of the 42 suites was furnished using regionally sourced materials — Egyptian cotton linens, marble bathrooms, hand-carved wood lattice, and handcrafted Savoir beds of England — designed specifically for this ship rather than adapted from a European sister vessel. The crew-to-guest ratio, at roughly 2.4-to-1, is among the highest in the industry.

Dining and Onboard Life

Two to three gourmet dining venues, including a private dining room and al fresco deck seating, alongside a 24-hour coffee and tea station. Shore excursions lean into local craft — visits to an alabaster workshop, a carpet weaver, a perfumerie, and a papyrus studio, all arranged directly by Uniworld with local artisans.

Every interior element was sourced and crafted specifically for this ship — Egyptian cotton, hand-carved wood, and locally made furnishings throughout.

A Sister Ship Worth Knowing About

River Tosca sails the identical 12-day itinerary in tandem with S.S. Sphinx but without the lavish Egyptian-sourced décor — worth specifying S.S. Sphinx by name when booking if the immersive interior design is part of the appeal.

Good to Know

Sails as part of a 12-day “Splendors of Egypt & the Nile” program, roundtrip from Cairo with pre- and post-cruise stays at a five-star Cairo hotel. The ship doesn’t sail in June, July, or August. Bookable directly through Uniworld.

Who It Suits

Uniworld does maximalism, and the S.S. Sphinx is no exception — the decorative scheme is the reason people book it and occasionally the reason they do not. The seven nights sit inside a twelve-day Cairo programme, so you are buying a complete, guided Egypt trip with the sailing at its centre.

Independent travellers who want to arrange their own Cairo days will find most of that structure redundant.

How It Compares On This Site

The direct rivals are Viking Osiris, which is the restrained Scandinavian opposite, and AmaDahlia, which sits between the two. All three launched within a year or two of each other and run comparable roundtrip programmes.

Against Egyptian-operated ships of similar comfort such as Sonesta St. George, you pay a clear premium for the packaged programme and the Western onboard culture.

What The Twelve Days Cover

Cairo and Giza at one end, the Luxor to Aswan temples in the middle, and usually Abu Simbel as part of the whole. It is a lot of Egypt in one booking, and a reasonable way to see it if you have one trip to spend.
