Al Moudira Hotel, Luxor

5 out of 5 stars
Price RangeLuxury (boutique)

Al Moudira is the anti-hotel hotel — a honeycomb of ten courtyards built from scratch in 1999 by Zeina Aboukheir on nearly ten hectares of Luxor’s quiet West Bank, designed to feel centuries old despite being genuinely new.

What Makes It Notable

Every one of its 54 rooms and suites is individually decorated with antiques and furnishings sourced across the Middle East — no two are alike, with high ceilings and floor tiles reportedly sourced from an ancient workshop. The hotel was designed by London-trained architect Olivier Sednaoui, who also designed shoe designer Christian Louboutin’s nearby Luxor home — Louboutin is reportedly so taken with Egypt that he also keeps a houseboat on the Nile.

Dining and Farm-to-Table

The hotel grows much of its own produce on its own farm, feeding four to five restaurants across the property — the domed Ottoman Hall for formal dinners, Khan Al Moudira for an Egyptian-Lebanese café menu, Il Forno for wood-fired pizza, and the newest Farm Kitchen built directly on the growing grounds. After dinner, the Sheherazade nightclub channels 1930s Cairo glamour in a low-lit lounge setting.

The hotel’s architect also designed Christian Louboutin’s nearby Luxor home — he’s reportedly so taken with Egypt he keeps a houseboat on the Nile too.

Good to Know

Located on the West Bank near the Valley of the Kings, genuinely removed from Luxor’s East Bank bustle — dining options are limited to the hotel itself, which most guests treat as a feature rather than a drawback. Bookable directly through Al Moudira or Relais & Châteaux.

Who It Suits

Al Moudira is for travellers who would rather stay somewhere with a point of view than somewhere with a brand standard. Ten courtyards built from scratch in 1999 on the quiet West Bank, nearly ten hectares of it, and a deliberate refusal to feel like a hotel chain. People who love it describe it as the reason they extended their Luxor stay.

It is on the West Bank, which is the right side for the tombs and the wrong side for the evening life around Luxor Temple.

How It Compares In Luxor

The East Bank alternatives are Hilton Luxor for Nile frontage and Steigenberger Nile Palace for scale and a central position. Jolie Ville is the island option with gardens. For historic grandeur, the Winter Palace — though check its renovation status before planning around it.

Which Bank To Stay On

The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and the Colossi are all West Bank. Karnak, Luxor Temple and the corniche restaurants are East. Staying west means an early start costs you a ferry or bridge crossing less, and every dinner costs you one more.
