Few hotels anywhere carry the literary weight of the Old Cataract. Opened in 1899 on a pink granite outcrop overlooking the Nile and Elephantine Island, it’s the hotel Agatha Christie wrote about — the setting she drew on for “Death on the Nile,” and where the 1978 film adaptation was shot.
The hotel’s guest book reads like a century of world history: Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, Princess Diana, and Jimmy Carter have all stayed here. The original Victorian-era Palace wing, with its Moorish arches and hand-carved interiors, was fully restored between 2008 and 2011 and now sits alongside a newer wing overlooking the same Nile view.
The hotel sits directly on the Nile’s edge in Aswan, facing Elephantine Island and the First Cataract that gives it its name — widely considered one of the best hotel views in Egypt, and arguably the primary reason to stay here even before the history.
