Egypt’s two biggest Red Sea resort towns get compared constantly, and for good reason — both offer strong diving, all-inclusive resorts, and reliable winter sun, but the coastlines and character are genuinely different underneath the similar sales pitch.
Hurghada is a sprawling, fast-grown resort city on Egypt’s mainland Red Sea coast, with a huge range of hotel categories from budget to five-star packed along one long stretch. Sharm El Sheikh, on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, feels more deliberately zoned — Naama Bay for nightlife, Nabq Bay for large family resorts, the Old Market for a quieter, more traditional pace.
Both offer excellent diving, but Sharm has the edge for serious divers — Ras Mohammed National Park and the Tiran Straits are among the Red Sea’s most celebrated dive sites, with dramatic reef walls and strong currents advanced divers specifically seek out. Hurghada’s Giftun Island reserve is excellent too, and arguably more convenient for beginners given its shorter, calmer boat access.
Sharm edges out Hurghada for serious divers; Hurghada edges out Sharm for sheer range of hotel budgets.
Both have their own international airports with direct flights from Cairo and much of Europe. Hurghada sits closer to Luxor, making a Nile Valley plus Red Sea combination trip slightly more convenient logistically than pairing the Nile with Sharm.
Sharm’s Nabq Bay has become a genuine hub for large-scale, family-oriented all-inclusive resorts with extensive kids’ clubs and water parks. Hurghada offers a comparable range but spread across more of the city, meaning more research into which specific resort fits rather than one obvious family district.
Serious diving is the priority, or you want distinct resort districts to choose between: Sharm El Sheikh. Want the widest possible range of hotel budgets and easier pairing with a Nile Valley itinerary: Hurghada. Both deliver on the core promise of warm water and reliable sun nearly year-round.
