Launched in 2022, Viking Osiris is the newest and most purpose-built ship on the Nile from a major international river-cruise line — designed from scratch for this specific river, in Viking’s recognizable clean Scandinavian style.

What Makes It Notable

The ship’s naming ceremony in Luxor was led by George Herbert, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon — direct descendant of the Lord Carnarvon who funded Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. He gave Viking exclusive permission to display rarely-seen family photographs from the actual excavation throughout the ship, a genuinely unique piece of history most Nile cruise ships can’t claim.

Cabins and Design

All 41 staterooms sit above water level with real windows — no interior cabins at any price point — arranged around a three-deck atrium filled with natural light. A quarter of the staterooms are genuine two-room suites, including two Explorer Suites with separate living areas and heated bathroom floors, among the best-appointed accommodations on the river.

No interior cabins at any price point — every stateroom has real windows onto the Nile.

Dining and Onboard Life

The main restaurant serves three meals a day with floor-to-ceiling views, alongside Aquavit Terrace, Viking’s signature indoor-outdoor casual dining space. Evenings lean toward educational lectures and live piano rather than staged entertainment — Viking’s programming consistently emphasizes destination immersion over onboard spectacle.

Good to Know

Sold as part of a 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” program, typically bookending the Nile sailing with stays at Cairo’s Nile Ritz-Carlton. Bookable directly through Viking River Cruises.

Who It Suits

Viking Osiris was designed from scratch for this river in 2022, and it shows in the things that are hard to retrofit: sight lines, deck layout, cabin proportions. The eight nights sit within a twelve-day Cairo programme. It suits travellers who want restrained Scandinavian design, a fixed and well-drilled itinerary, and no surprises.

It is also the least Egyptian-feeling ship on this site, which is either the reassurance you want or the thing you came to avoid.

How It Compares On This Site

Straight rivals are Uniworld’s S.S. Sphinx, far more decorative, and AmaDahlia, between the two in style. For a comparable standard on an Egyptian-operated ship at lower cost, Sonesta Star Goddess or Historia.

Booking Windows

The international lines sell further ahead than the Egyptian operators, and Viking in particular fills its winter sailings early. If you want a specific month between November and February, you are generally booking a year out rather than a season out.
