Egypt in 10 Days: Cairo, Nile Cruise, and Red Sea

Ten days is the sweet spot for a lot of travelers — enough time to cover the Nile Valley properly and still add a real stretch on the Red Sea, without the trip feeling like a sprint from one site to the next.

Days 1–3: Cairo & Giza

An extra day over the 7-day version buys room for Saqqara and Dahshur — the pyramids that predate Giza — alongside the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo, giving Cairo the depth a rushed itinerary usually sacrifices first.

Days 4–7: Nile Cruise, Luxor to Aswan

A proper 3–4 night Nile cruise, rather than a compressed 2-night version, means real time at Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae — without rushing any of them. Abu Simbel fits as a full-day add-on from Aswan.

A 3–4 night cruise turns temple-hopping from a checklist into an actual pace.

Days 8–10: Red Sea Coast

Fly from Aswan or Luxor to Hurghada for three days of reef diving, snorkeling, and genuine downtime — a deliberate contrast to the history-dense first week, and the reason this itinerary outperforms a Nile-only trip for most travelers.

Why This Order Works

Front-loading history and back-loading beach time means you’re not trying to summon energy for another temple on day nine. Reversing the order — beach first — tends to make the temple-heavy stretch feel like a comedown.

Where This Itinerary Has Flex

If Alexandria interests you more than a full Red Sea stretch, swapping in a day trip there during the Cairo leg is a reasonable substitution — this itinerary shape isn’t rigid, just a sensible default balance.

How To Split The Ten Days

The version that works: three nights Cairo, four nights cruising Luxor to Aswan, three nights Red Sea. The version that does not: two nights everywhere, with an internal flight on four of the ten days.

Ten days is enough for three regions only if you accept that one of them gets a short visit. Make that the coast, not the Nile.

Which Cruise Length Fits

A four-night sailing is the natural fit here — Blue Shadow, Royal Lotus and Semiramis II all run it. Seven nights would eat the coast entirely; three feels rushed once you count embarkation.

The Flights That Make It Work

Fly into Cairo and out of Hurghada, or the reverse. Booking a return into the same airport adds a domestic flight and half a day for no benefit, and on a ten-day trip that is a meaningful share of the holiday.

Where To Stay In Each Leg

Cairo: Mena House for Giza or the Nile Ritz-Carlton for the museum. Coast: Steigenberger Al Dau for convenience to the Luxor road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you want to add the Red Sea — 10 days allows a full Nile Valley cruise plus real beach time, rather than history alone.
After — front-loading history and back-loading beach time avoids trying to summon energy for another temple after days of relaxing.
