Opened in 1907, the Winter Palace shares the same golden-age pedigree as the Old Cataract in Aswan — Agatha Christie wrote much of “Death on the Nile” here too, and it was on these front steps that Howard Carter announced the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.
Guests over the decades have included Winston Churchill, King Farouk, Empress Eugénie of France, and Rudyard Kipling. Its 1886 Restaurant remains one of Luxor’s most storied dining rooms, and the hotel sits just 100 meters from Luxor Temple itself.

As of this writing, the hotel is closed for renovation under new management by Mandarin Oriental, expected to reopen in 2027 as the Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor.
